tipthe.dev is run by Jeremy Bray, a sole trader based in Queensland, Australia. Using the site, the widget or the badge means these terms apply to you.

What this is

A tip jar for developers. You put a button on your README or your page, someone presses it, and money reaches your Stripe account. tipthe.dev takes 5% of each tip. Stripe charges its own processing fee on top, which comes out of the same payment and goes to Stripe, not to us.

Tips are capped at A$999 each, and messages at 500 characters.

Developer accounts

You sign in with GitHub and your handle becomes your tip page. You're responsible for the GitHub account you sign in with, and for connecting a Stripe account you're entitled to use.

Stripe holds the actual payment relationship with you, including identity checks and payout timing. If Stripe restricts or closes your account, tips can't reach you, and that's between you and Stripe.

Money is yours as soon as Stripe settles it. We never hold your balance.

Tipping someone

A tip is voluntary. It buys nothing: no support obligation, no feature, no priority, no promise from the developer about anything. If you want something in return, that's ordinary paid work and doesn't belong here.

You pay on Stripe's checkout page. The developer sees the amount, your message if you wrote one, and your email address if Stripe passed it back.

Refunds

Ask within seven days and you get the tip back. Email hello@heyjeremy.com with the payment and I'll refund it, including the 5% we took. Stripe's processing fee isn't returned to us, so we wear that part.

After seven days I'll still look at it, particularly if the tip went to the wrong person or the amount was clearly a mistake, and refunds already paid out to a developer depend on that developer agreeing.

None of this cuts across the Australian Consumer Law. Where the consumer guarantees apply they apply on top of what's written here, and they can't be excluded.

Acceptable use

Don't use tipthe.dev to launder money, to take payment for anything illegal, to impersonate another developer, or to run the widget in a way that misleads the person pressing the button. Don't attack the site or try to get at other people's data.

Accounts doing any of that get closed, and where money is involved I'll cooperate with Stripe and with anyone who has to be told.

The widget and the badge

The widget and badge are yours to embed anywhere you like, including pages we've never seen. They're served as they are; if either breaks a page of yours, take it off.

Availability

This is a small service run by one person. It'll go down sometimes, and there's no uptime promise. If it's down, tips wait rather than disappear, because the payment only exists once Stripe has taken it.

Liability

Beyond the consumer guarantees above, our liability is limited to the fees we've taken from you in the twelve months before the problem. For a tipper that's the 5% on your own tips; for a developer, the 5% on tips you received.

Ending it

Stop whenever you want: take the widget off your pages and the tip jar goes quiet. To have the account itself removed, email hello@heyjeremy.com and I'll delete your developer record and its tips. There's no delete button in the dashboard yet. I can also close an account that breaches these terms, and I'll say why.

Changes

If these change, the new version goes up at this URL with a new date at the top.
